Retreats: The Mental & Emotional Benefits of Getting Away for Fun

Updated: Jul 4

I know, I know. You're an adult with responsibilities up to your eyeballs, society is whack-a-doodle messed up in multiple ways right now, the economy is brutal for most people, and uncertainty abounds like never before.

And yet....lest we all become martyrs who "go down with the ship" and get lost in doom and gloom, I believe we have a responsibility, to ourselves as much as to the children, and to future generations, to protect our sanity, and our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.....by unplugging from it all for brief periods.

There, I said it!

I'm not talking about permanently putting your head in the sand and pretending like everything is fine and there's no problems that affect you.

But I AM talking about giving yourself some respite. Some nourishment. Some healing laughter, and dare I say,...fun!

I've written on the value of fun and frivolity and play before, but it truly feels more valuable than ever right now to reclaim happiness, wellness, and deep soulful connections. To hold the vision of what we DO want to be created out of the crumbling of society. To receive any and all healing available for our weary souls and nervous systems.

My favorite respite? A retreat in a natural setting. You get to get away, do fun activities, and commune with the healing power of nature.

Now before you go arguing for all the limiting reasons why you cannot even fathom attending a retreat right now, please read why they are so valuable to our wellbeing.

Why go on a retreat?

group of happy women on retreat in Mt Shasta, California on a summer day.

  1. Disconnect from daily life routines—sometime we just need a change of scenery, a shake-up of our daily habits, and an escape from responsibilities. It's also an opportunity to let yourself be nurtured, especially if you are typically the one nurturing everyone else. Because we cannot be ON 24/7. We are not robots.

  2. Rest, reset & recharge—with less responsibilities, you have time and space to relax deeper, rest more profoundly, and truly be able to receive whatever it is your body, mind and soul actually need. The land, the food and the built-in leisure time will take care of the rest.

  3. Remember who you are—life has a way of sweeping us up and carrying us away according to other people’s agendas. And EVERYONE has an opinion on what you should be doing with yourself and your time. Am I right?! Retreating has a knack for pulling you back home to yourself, your true needs, your true desires.

  4. Deep personal insight—remembering who you are naturally deepens your personal insights. This not only feels like a relief (because you don’t have to work so hard to fight off the untruths), but also brings about a great deal of clarity: of your actual priorities & values, as well as what in your daily life fits, and what in your daily life needs to be released when you get home. It's also easier to see from a relaxed, rested and resourced standpoint, how you may be getting in your own way and/or causing some of your own suffering. Not to shame yourself, but to empower yourself to choose differently!

  5. Connect with like-minded people who are yearning for the same quality of experience you are: deeper sense of self, blissful reunion with the natural elements, and heartfelt connection with others. Unplugging from the madness of the world and re-plugging into nature, personal wellbeing, and nourishing connections.

  6. Build a stronger connection to nature—many wellness retreats include spending time outdoors to commune individually and as a group with what makes mother nature so awe-inspiring and primally empowering. No tech, just breathing in the prana (life force) that is abundant in the natural world, and slowing down to the pace of nature. This is a beautiful way to practice being in the present moment, one breath at a time.

  7. Fun & adventure— while many retreats have time scheduled in for daily rest, they also include a variety of fun and unique activities to feed your adventurous spirit and engage you in activities that you likely won't encounter in your daily life at home. In our upcoming retreat to Mt Shasta, for example, we will explore inner and outer landscapes as well as primal and cosmic connections. High-Sensation Seeking Sensitives (HSP’s) will be deeply satisfied with our itinerary.

  8. Develop new wellness practices—Many wellness retreats begin each morning with activities such as yoga, meditation and dream journaling, and end each day with a restorative sound bath. No prior experience required. You get to try on new ways of practicing self-care and learning tools that you can use back at home.

  9. Rejuvenate and uplift your spirit—It's highly likely that every activity offered during a wellness retreat will be designed to empower, uplift, heal, restore and reconnect you with your inner wisdom, as well as your path to wholeness and mind/body/soul wellbeing.

  10. Make new friends—retreats bring together a small number of self-selected people to partake in the shared journey. That means that you have shared interests and will likely have many points of connections, so you are bound to make deep, heartfelt connections that last a lifetime.

  11. Let go and be held—In a retreat, the leaders have you from start to finish. You don't have to figure out logistics or meals or how to spend your time--It's already taken care of and figured out. You just have to show up and participate and allow yourself to be held and nourished by the sacred container of the retreat. What a gift!

If I've got you at least curious about the possibility of treating yourself to a retreat, I'm thrilled!
